I’ve got a thing that people say that really pisses me off.

When somebody dies, someone famous, for whatever reason, and there is worldwide media attention, there is always somebody who says;

“Didn’t see any of you complaining when a soldier was killed yesterday.”

Fuck off.

War is horrible. There are people, men and women as young as 18, flying out to unimaginable chaos and terror, to protect innocent people, and prevent evil from spreading. These people who choose to go and fight for our country, or the US, or whoever, possess bravery that I will never be able to comprehend. When they are killed by a rebel fighter, or a bomb, or a helicopter crash, they have died doing what they loved, and protecting their country. It is so tragic, so sad and the fear and uncertainty that friends and relatives of military personnel must feel when the death of a member of the forces is reported on the news, must be unimaginable.

That said, it is not, and it will never be fair for people to chastise someone for posting a Facebook status, or a tweet, expressing sadness about the death of a well known figure.

You can say “oh, it’s funny how you care that Amy Winehouse has died, but you don’t care that a soldier died today” all you like, but I often find that these same people only emerge on their pedestals when a celebrity has died. I never see anyone mourning the death of a soldier on Facebook if they have nothing to compare it to.

The people I respect and understand who say stuff like the above is people who have friends/relatives currently serving in the army. It must be a constant fear for them, so to see people mourning celebrities must infuriate them, I fully understand that. But this is about people who post these sanctimonious statuses to portray some holier-than-thou image, when in reality they are no different.

I’m only saying this because I saw a status that said, and I quote (copy and paste)

“player collapses on a pitch playing football and its world wide news. Man takes a bullet to the chest in afghanistan, bleeds to death whilst lying. No disrespect Muamba but who had heard of you last week other than Birmingham and Bolton fans, get better and all that, but your no hero”

This is in reference to Fabrice Muamba, a proffessional footballer who collapsed due to a cardiac arrest during a game on Saturday. He is currently in a medically induced coma.

What a fucking horrible, disrespectful thing to say! Nobody called him a hero, nobody has expressed anything but sadness for Muamba. Who gives a fuck if anyone had heard of him last week? Who really cares? This is a 23 year old man, with a fiancee and a young son, who is critically ill in hospital. The reason that it is so talked about is that he is a professional athlete in the most popular sport in the world. A fit and healthy young man, collapses with heart failure. That is not normal, and as millions saw it happen on television, it will be talked about. And as his survival is by no means certain, it will continue to be talked about, and people will still pray for him.

“No disrespect to Muamba” - yeah, no disrespect to you mate, I know you’re in a coma and may still die, but your life isn’t as important as a soldier.

I agree, it is unfair that celebrity deaths recieve more media coverage than the deaths of soldiers and military personnel, but that is the media age.

Muamba’s collapse was extremely strange and out of nowhere. Soldiers put their lives on the line every minute of every day. It doesn’t make one life more or less important than the other.
